elderberry pancake holler holunder pfannkuchen

Early Summer in your pancakes: Elderflower

Have you walked through the forest lately and smelled this unique, wonderful, sweet perfume of elderflower? I did today and couldn’t resist bringing some home. Not to put them in a vase. Much better: to put them in our pancakes :–) A sweet dish that my granny used to make for me and my brother when we were little. A white-flour-deep-fried-version with loads of icing sugar on top, though. Which I remember to taste absolutely amazing. But as my attitude towards food and also taste for sweetness changed somewhat since then, I figured I should try a healthier take on that […]

coconut water melon summer drink

Water melon, coconut water & the first HELLO of Summer

Summer is in the air! …and on the glittering blue lakes. And on the glowing bright blooms in the fields. And on the market-stalls presenting gorgeous sweet berries. And in my head – thinking about Summer sun and long evenings on the Patio… I can already hear our grill in the garden shed, as he is screaming for fresh air and the first major bbq-session of this season ;–) Can’t wait for it! Tomorrow he will be “set free” :–) One thing that’s definitely going to land on the grill is water melon. Surly some of you have heard of or tried that way […]

sponge cake buckwheat poppyseed lemon cheese mother day

Brilliant bright sponge-base for individual (Mother’s day) cake

What would life be without Moms? … I’d say, literally: nothing. No mothers, no life (fathers too of course, but that’s another story). Ever since I am a mom myself, this day feels somewhat funny. Kind of like I were acting out two different roles simultaneously in the same movie. Firstly, the grateful daughter, who is thinking hard to come up with an idea of how to bring a little joy to her mom. And secondly, the devoted mother who is overwhelmed by her son’s lovely poem… or at least, I will be once my son is old enough to actually understand the meaning of this day. […]

pao de queijo cheese rolls käse

Brazilian “pão de queijo” cheese (rock’n’)rolls for your Easter Brunch

Can you hear that? Sounds like someone is hopping around… Might just be Easter bunny :–) At my place it’s more likely my personal “bunny” (=my husband) lurking around the kitchen, trying to sneak in unseen. Why? No, not to hide Easter eggs (as is tradition here)… But to nick as many pães de queijo (= Brazilian cheese rolls) as he can possibly carry! And he has big hands! Well… I have to admit, those little cheesy puffs are rather addictive. Rock’n’roll for your taste buds. Or maybe Samba… Either way, a party in your mouth ;–) If you have ever had the chance […]

Christmas tree pizza

XmasTree in the oven & magical (pizza-)bread dough

Almost Christmas. Did you find the time yet to slow down a bit and actually FEEL it? And enjoy the good vibes (while skilfully ignoring all the lurking Xmas-stress)? I finally made it to that point :–D My happy Christmas-mood even magically turned our pizzas into Christmas trees last weekend ;–) There is no such thing as magic, you say? But isn’t Christmas all about magic? The enchanting magnificence of glittering snow (it snowed this week – YAY!). How all the Christmas-smells send you on a time travel back to your childhood days. How everyone suddenly finds a free spot in their schedule to meet […]

Hot “cloved” mandarins & the smell of snow

When I turn the calendar page to November, there are usually a few things going on in my mind simultaniously: Wow, time is going so fast! Another year almost over… I should try to organize the last few weeks of the year, so I can actually use the holiday season to unwind, reflect on this year’s events and maybe do a bit of planning for the coming year, instead of drowning in this massive wave of Xmas-stress that’s just waiting to crush everyone… And: snow :–) If the weather is not deciding to turn on those polluters among us, we […]

Simple food for complicated days – oven potatoes!

Do you remember the last time you had one of those days, when the world seems to be plotting against you? Well, this last Tuesday was my most recent hope-it’s-soon-tomorrow-day. My son is currently going through a quiet intense teething phase which turns this normally well-behaved little angle into someone that Santa Clause would most probably have on the naughty list… For all of you, who have never been a mom of a teething toddler: imagine a cute, little monkey of around 13 kg sitting on your hip, wanting to be carried around pretty much all day – and don’t even think about putting […]

Herbs – a gift for the senses

Herbs just take every single dish up another level, don’t you think? Two years ago I planted my first few herbs and since then the amount and variety are increasing constantly. They are taking over my garden as reigning plantpower (although the pumpkin seems to attempt a coup this year ;–)) I know that most people would prefer vibrant, colourful flowers to decorate their garden, but I am totally into those different greens and modest, but beautiful blooms. And when you give them a chance and walk up close to them, they will completely charm you with their amazing range of fragrances. […]

Merry berry memories in a jam jar

Blueberry season almost over? What??? No, I don’t agree! How I love those little juicy blue bites of deliciousness. Recently even my husband found out that “they are rather good if REALLY ripe” – and you have to know that he is no fruit-friend. My little toddler adores them too. They are currently ranking on no 1 of his food hit list. That means, he would spit out any other food he happens to chew on, if he suddenly finds blueberries on the table. Making space for the berries! That’s what I call clear priorities ;–) But food is not always just about taste, is it? […]
